When I started Arena DM in 2012 I wanted to build my professional reputation as a web designer by providing a high quality service. Not exactly an original ethos, I guess you may be rather surprised if I didn’t say that but it’s more than just rhetoric, I really care about what my customers think of my work.
In fact it’s generally of more concern to me that my customers experience value for money, than it is for me to achieve a specific profit margin on any given project and so I’m normally happy to go the “extra mile” for my customers even if that means accepting a slightly lower fee or bearing slightly higher production costs than I would have otherwise done.
You see in my view, a designer’s life blood is his customer base and the recommendations that they can make to other on his (or her’s) behalf.
Such an approach is a double edge sword, offering inherent commercial benefits and while also harbouring some fundamental pitfalls. It’s true that I’ve had my fair share of people who tried to take advantage but I have also benefited from many, many customer recommendations over the years and there are far more honest reasonable people than there are piss takers.
About 90% of my new business comes by way of recommendations and I passed another contact today from a previous customer who’s friend needs a new website for their restaurant business located in Oxford. So I’d like to use today’s post to say thank you to Pat from MultiFix Oxford Ltd for becoming the latest to recommend me.
